Trinidad and Tobago is a twin island country just north of South America, and the southernmost nation of the West Indies in the Caribbean, boasting both sealed and unsealed roads.

The Caribbean Transportation Consultancy Services (CARITRANS) Company Limited, based in Trinidad and Tobago, was founded in 2012 by Mr Lacey Williams. Their specific areas of expertise include transportation planning, traffic engineering, traffic signal design and coordination, traffic and transit simulation (modelling) and transport economic analysis.

CARITRANS had a need to collect data on both paved and unpaved roads in order to meet the requirements for inputting IRI results into their economic appraisal systems (HDM4). This data collection was currently being undertaken manually, which posed both safety and data accuracy concerns. At a chance meeting at a trade event in Australia, Mr. Williams was introduced to ARRB Systems and their product offering.

After having investigated other options, CARITRANS purchased their first Roughometer 3 unit late 2018 and have already utilised the system on public sector projects and quasi-public sector projects, for time series analysis of road surface ride quality. This system is used to monitor the road deterioration, as well as being an early indicator of potential road surface problems, allowing road authorities to manage the issues before they become a severely costly issue.

Mr Williams commented the reason for choosing the ARRB Systems Roughometer 3 was its portability, ease of use and the price point. He notes, “I like the simplicity of the system and the repeatability of the results.” The unit will be transported to different locations around the country and the Caribbean to undertake projects where required.
