RESPONSIBILITIES:

A vacancy exists within ARRB Systems SA for a Pavement Engineer/Technologist to provide technical support in the investigation, assessment, analysis, design and rehabilitation of roads and pavement infrastructure. The successful candidate will contribute to pavement and rehabilitation design, pavement materials evaluation, road-condition and structural-capacity data analysis, construction support, quality assurance and technical reporting. The role will also provide technical support on SANRAL and other road-authority projects and requires close collaboration with engineering, site, data-collection and project teams. This role is based at the Westmead office.

KEY PERFORMANCE AREAS:

  • Conduct and assist with pavement investigations, condition assessments, site inspections and materials investigations.
  • Assess pavement defects, deterioration mechanisms and structural conditions
  • Analyse pavement-condition, traffic, materials and structural data to support engineering recommendations.
  • Prepare pavement and rehabilitation designs using Rubicon Toolbox and approved methodologies.
  • Analyse road-condition data, including IRI, rutting, MPD, cracking, texture and pavement deflections.
  • Perform quality-control checks on road-condition survey data and identify anomalous, missing or inconsistent measurements.
  • Review pavement materials and interpret field and laboratory test results against relevant specifications.
  • Provide technical support on pavement design, materials, construction methods and rehabilitation works.
  • Support SANRAL and other road-authority projects, including investigations, designs, technical assessments and construction-related queries.
  • Prepare technical reports, design documentation, calculations, findings and recommendations.
  • Liaise with clients, contractors, laboratories and internal project teams.
  • Ensure technical work complies with applicable standards, project specifications, company procedures and the Integrated Management System.
  • Identify and report technical risks, non-conformances and areas requiring corrective action.
  • Comply with relevant health and safety requirements and maintain accurate project records.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

  • BTech, BEng Tech, BSc Engineering or BEng in Civil Engineering.
  • Minimum 3 years’ relevant experience in road design, pavement engineering and construction.
  • Experience in pavement investigations, condition assessments and rehabilitation design.
  • Knowledge of mechanistic pavement design and practical experience using Rubicon Toolbox.
  • Experience analysing road-condition and pavement-performance data
  • Experience reviewing and interpreting field and laboratory materials-test results.
  • Knowledge of COTO specifications, TMH and TRH manuals, TG2 and other relevant South African standards and guidelines.
  • Working knowledge of FIDIC contracts; GCC, NEC or JBCC experience advantageous.
  • Experience with quality assurance and quality control of road-condition survey data.
  • ECSA registration as a Candidate Engineering Technologist or Candidate Engineer.
  • Valid driver’s licence and willingness to travel to project and construction sites.
  • Commitment to working towards professional registration with ECSA.

SKILLS AND KNOWLEGE:

  • Pavement investigation, assessment, analysis and rehabilitation design.
  • Pavement materials, road construction and mechanistic pavement design.
  • Rubicon Toolbox, road-condition data analysis and QA/QC.
  • Knowledge of COTO, TMH, TRH, TG2 and relevant standards.
  • Understanding of FIDIC contracts; GCC, NEC and JBCC advantageous.
  • Microsoft Excel and Word; CAD/GIS advantageous.
  • Strong technical report writing, analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent communication, planning, organisation and attention to detail.
  • Ability to work independently and within multidisciplinary teams.
