iSAVe

Product specifications

Avoid slip-ups with a cutting-edge development in skid resistance measurement. The intelligent Safety Assessment Vehicle is a critical tool to locate areas that may be a matter of life or death for motorists, including those with insufficient pavement grip when vital vehicle manoeuvres are required.

Key benefits

  • The core of the iSAVe is the Sideways Force Coefficient (SFC) assembly which measures the friction of the road surface in the wheelpaths
  • Works continuously at traffic speeds, with an operating speed range of at least 30 to 50 mph
  • Able to collect far more data than traditional locked wheel or friction testing equipment such as a grip tester or other trailer-based CFME devices
  • Survey range up to 185 miles per water load
  • Efficient water usage, with a water flow regulated pump controller to ensure correct flow at all speeds, with flow automatically turned on when the measurement wheel is lowered and off when the wheel is raised
  • Tank size options can be customized from <264 gal up to 2,640 gal
  • Also fitted with sensors capable of collecting roughness, rutting, macrotexture, imagery, geometry and spatial and linear referencing location
  • Fully integrated into the Hawkeye platform – Hawkeye Insight can be used to for data display and investigation

Product applications

  • The iSAVe is used to measure the wet skid resistance of defined sections of road surface across a network, in both wheel paths
  • Emphasis on high friction demand locations, such as approaches to traffic signals and intersections, around tight curves, and where vehicles are typically required to brake and accelerate
  • Data can be cross-referenced with crash data to identify potentially high-risk friction areas

Product features

  • Determines skid resistance of a pavement surface by measuring the Sideway Force Coefficient (SFC)
  • Designed and built to British Standard, BS7941-1: 2016
  • Meets and/or exceeds all BS7941-1:2006 calibration requirements
  • Designed and built to be compliant with proposed ASTM Friction Standard WK40015 (currently in draft)
  • Testing tyres will conform to proposed ASTM WK73391 standard for the SFC tire specification (currently in draft)
  • Friction measurement in both wheel paths simultaneously
  • A dynamically controlled flow of water, applies a consistent water film to the road, wetting the surface immediately in front of the test wheels
  • Spilt rim design enables rapid change of measuring test tyre
  • Hawkeye modular integration synchronizes all data acquisition sensors
  • Data can be batch processed within Hawkeye Processing Toolkit and uploaded to Hawkeye Insight for efficient data display and investigation
  • Inter-related profiler system certified and/or in conformance to EN 13036-6:2008 (E), AASHTO R56, is Class 1 as per EN 13036-5:2008 clause 3.3, Class 1 as per ASTM E950 and meets ASTM E1926-08(15), AASHTO M 328-14, AASHTO R 43, AASHTO R 54-14 and AASHTO R 57-14 requirements

Along with the collection of wet friction measurement, the iSAVe is fitted with sensors capable of collecting:

  • Roughness (IRI)
  • Rutting
  • Macrotexture (SMTD or MPD)
  • Road and roadside imagery
  • GNNS spatial positioning with fused inertial correction
  • Geometry (crossfall, grade, horizontal and vertical curvature)

It is also fitted with the following additional features to minimize measurement variability:

  • Dynamic monitoring of the vertical load
  • Continuous tyre pressure
  • Dynamic speed-controlled water flow system
  • Ambient air and pavement surface temperature monitoring
