Limpopo’s Journey Towards Vision Zero

ARRB Systems proudly announces its recent achievements in advancing road safety through the iRAP road safety project for the Limpopo Road Safety Programme (LRSP) in South Africa. This initiative underscores ARRB’s commitment to creating safer roads, ultimately aligning with the global Vision Zero goal of eliminating road fatalities and serious injuries.

In a comprehensive assessment of 1,000 kilometres of pre-selected roads, only 37% met the standard of 3-stars or better. However, the analysis undertaken indicates that implementing basic countermeasures could enhance safety by an impressive 30%, potentially preventing up to 1,180 fatalities and serious injuries on these roads.

ARRB Systems was appointed by the Impact Catalyst, the implementing partner for the LRSP, funded by the Anglo-American Foundation. The project progressed seamlessly due to the dedication and passion of ARRB’s team. Rigorous internal quality checks ensured high levels of accuracy, complemented by external quality assurance conducted by an independent iRAP representative to verify survey precision and road attribute coding.

Verushka Balaram, Head of Road Safety at ARRB Systems, led a skilled team, including Alicia Sookoo, Vukani Mthembu, and Talia Ismail, who delivered a two-day in-person iRAP Star Ratings Essentials course. The training, attended by 28 participants, featured presentations, live demonstrations, and interactive discussions aimed at enhancing road safety knowledge.

Verushka expressed her enthusiasm for the collaboration, stating, “As we approach the project’s conclusion, our team has found working alongside professionals from iRAP, the Impact Catalyst, the South African National Roads Agency Limited (#SANRAL), the Road Agency Limpopo (#RAL), the Anglo-American Foundation, and the CSIR to be a rewarding experience. We look forward to future partnerships that will help us continue making our roads safer for all.”

ARRB Systems remains committed to leveraging its expertise and innovative solutions to improve road safety standards globally.
